At West 5 Optometry, a comprehensive eye exam is about more than updating your glasses or contact lenses. Eyecare is an important part of total wellness. We carefully evaluate your vision and thoroughly assess the health of your eyes to detect conditions such as Glaucoma, Cataracts, and Macular Degeneration, often before symptoms begin. Your eyes can reveal important insights of your overall health and may help identify early signs of concerns like Diabetes or High Blood Pressure. Our goal is to provide clarity, confidence, and peace of mind through proactive, personalized care.
How Often Should I Get an Eye Exam?
At West 5 Optometry, we recommend that patients aged 19 and under have a comprehensive eye exam every year.
Children’s vision can change quickly as they grow, and annual exams help support proper visual development, enhance learning, and allow us to detect any eye health concerns as early as possible. The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) covers annual routine eye examinations and follow-up examinations if necessary for children 19 & under.
At West 5 Optometry, we recommend that patients aged 20 to 64 have an eye exam every 1–2 years, depending on their individual needs, symptoms, and risk factors. Regular exams allow our team to monitor for changes in vision and identify early signs of eye disease—often before symptoms are noticeable.
OHIP Coverage (Ages 20–64)
OHIP provides basic coverage for patients with specific diseases such as Diabetes and Glaucoma. These limited, medically necessary eye exams are designed to address specific concerns but do not include the full appropriate range of testing involved in a comprehensive eye examination to assess eye disease.
We at West 5 Optometry believe in the highest standard of eyecare today. Our comprehensive eye exams include a thorough assessment of both your vision and overall eye health, using the latest advanced diagnostic technology available in Canadian eyecare ensuring that nothing is missed and your eyes are fully evaluated. The doctors recommend these advance tests for improved quality of care.
At West 5 Optometry, we recommend that patients aged 65 and over have an eye exam every year.
As we age, the risk of developing conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration increases, making annual exams essential for early detection and ongoing management.
OHIP Coverage (Ages 65+)
OHIP provides basic coverage every year for patients with specific diseases such as Diabetes and Glaucoma and every 18 months for those who don’t. These limited, medically necessary eye exams are designed to address specific concerns but do not include the full appropriate range of testing involved in a comprehensive eye examination to assess eye disease.

Your eye health is closely connected to your overall well-being, which is why every appointment is designed as a comprehensive wellness check for your eyes. We take the time to look beyond vision alone, considering how your eye health fits into your broader health picture.

There are many other components to a comprehensive eye examination than reading a chart! Our Optometrists at West 5 Optometry are trained to perform tests that do not require a response for our patients that are unable to do so. To learn more about what is involved in an eye examination for non-verbal patients or those who have limited ability to respond, check out our Pediatric Services page.
